Because of the terrible mineral depletion of our soils, it’s becoming more hard to obtain enough amounts of selenium and other minerals and nutrients from food. Some of the advantages of selenium in accession to protecting heart health include immune system support, protecting against several forms of cancer, anti-aging and helping to prevent arthritis. Some of the Symptoms of deficiency for this mineral are muscle failing and uncomfortableness, high cholesterol, frequent infections (which may indicate poor immune system function), and poor liver and pancreas function which may result in symptoms like gas, bloating and indigestion.

Selenium is reported to mimic the activity of insulin. In laboratory studies performed in recent years, selenium has been shown to arbitrate a number of insulin-like actions such as stimulating glucose intake and regulating metabolic processes including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis and the pentose phosphate pathway. Although the exact mechanics of the insulin mimicking action of selenium has as yet to be elucidated, it is reported that these actions are mediated through the activation of main proteins involved in the insulin-signal cascade. Selenium is also reported to play a role in reducing the oxidative stress associated with diabetes, thereby retarding the progression of the secondary complications of diabetes such as neuropathy, retinopathy and cataracts.

Natural food sources high in selenium include cereals (eg. corn, wheat, and rice), nuts (brazil nuts and walnuts), legumes (soybeans), animal products (beef, chicken, egg, cheese), seafood (tuna). Getting Better Nutrition for Athletes from Healthy Snacks

Proper nutrition for athletes can taste good, but you need the right healthy snacks to make a difference. Needless to say, there are plenty of horribly tasting protein drinks and repulsive power bars available. Now, though, locating the right snacks and the most flavorful nutrition can be a much tastier experience than it was in the past.

Whether you conceive your own healthy snacks or buy something prepackaged, it is more common now to find treats that taste appealing and provide a boost to your fitness routine. In this world of modern innovation, the most powerful nutrition for athletes can now be much more expediently obtained from healthy snacks in concentrated whole foods that include a special blend of Chinese herbs. These concentrated formulas include precise levels of essential fats, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. What’s even better is that these concentrated snack formulas taste great, and they are so effortless to prepare.

To consume even more solid nutrition for athletes, blend bananas or other fruits with these all natural whole food concentrates and make healthy snacks that could be full meals, especially for breakfast. While also enjoying additional fruit, try adding organic peanut butter for even greater benefits. You may be surprised at the great flavor and your body will appreciate the increase in essential fats. When it comes to quick and convenient nutrition for athletes, these kinds of concentrated, nutrient dense smoothies are far superior to juicing or food combining. It is reassuring to know that you can acquire all the nutrients you need to perform at peak levels by blending some powder and liquid together in a matter of moments.

It bears mentioning that purchasing prepackaged healthy snacks requires some digging. Learning more about what you are purchasing is crucial if you are really serious about finding the highest quality nutrition for athletes. It is wise to look beyond the nutrition fact labels and see if you can find out how the products are processed and whether or not they contain whole food ingredients with live enzymes. Determine if the healthy snacks you think you are buying are alkaline foods or acid foods. This will depend on the structure of the all-natural, whole food ingredients that are used and if they were overly processed in packaging.

Quantities to watch out for on the nutrition facts label include sodium and sugar levels. Too many people make the mistake of only measuring calories, carbs and protein when buying nutrition for athletes. Disappointingly, many of the so-called healthy foods actually contain excessive amounts of protein for anyone except professional athletes or serious bodybuilders. Unquestionably, healthy snacks that qualify as appropriate nutrition for athletes are those that include whole food ingredients with plant-based protein, not labratory produced proteins, vitamins or minerals.

Author Cliff Everett Smith is the CEO of an online health food store,, that provides pre-packaged healthy snacks not found in typical supermarkets or health food stores. The all natural food formulas he recommends are quick, simple to prepare, and provide powerful nutrition for athletes.

My Quest To Be On Reality Television

I love reality television. Nothing can make my night any better than one of my favorite shows being on. There are so many to choose from that I can always get my fix. For a few years one of my favorites has been The Biggest Loser. I am not sure exactly why I like it, but I can take some guesses.

The show seems like it is about people like me. I also struggle with my weight at times. I could withstand dropping a couple of pounds however the people in the show are in a lot worse shape than I am. As I get older I know I have to do something. Think that by tuning into the show every week, I have found a desire to do what I need to do. I do not want to be faced with the problems that come with the excess fat on the body. I do not want to put my health at risk because of my lifestyle, but I also did not want to go find a way to learn how to lose weight fast if there was something better that I could do, and the things that I saw on the Biggest Loser looked like a healthier way for me to get into shape, but the problem I faced was actually doing what I was supposed to do.

The story lines on the show also attracted me. It seems like they are someone that I might know in my own life. They just struggled with their weight. They had regular jobs and families just like me. Maybe, I thought, I could be a contestant. There was a site on the internet that had the information that I needed. I read the rules and the application. But I never filled it out. To lose enough weight to win would not ever be possible because I was not carrying that much extra weight to start. Rather than depending on a reality show, I would have to depend on myself.

That was when I decided that I would be my own Biggest Loser. One night after watching a bunch of television I decided to find a way to get my body into the shape it was supposed to be in and I knew that the answer was not in the infomercial that was airing that promised to help a person find a way how to lose weight fast at home in a week, but rather would require me to make the effort to eat right and exercise regularly if I was to really get into shape. It did not take long for me to find a bunch of ways to get myself to a healthy weight.

The first place I turned to was the internet which had an abundance of plans that promised to help me. A medical professional was the next place that I turned to for advice on what to do. Exercise was a different issue. I had never worked out before. Fortunately there were plenty of fitness clubs in my area to guide me. With the help of the trainers there, I was able to develop an exercise program that was designed just for me.

With diet and exercise plan in hand I went to work. I do not think I had double digit weight losses like I saw on the Biggest Loser. But it did come off. It might not have been fast, but it was happening. My improved diet allowed me to have more energy than before. My physical activity became less of a chore and more of something I was looking forward to. I was able to follow my plan despite a few stumbles. I had no desire to be called a quitter by anyone. That is why I am now at a healthy weight.
